History enthusiasts looking to delve deeper into our Roman heritage can visit one of the greatest discoveries in world archaeology during the holidays: the Roman Villa of La Olmeda, discovered in 1968 and located in Pedrosa de la Vega, very close to the historic town of Saldaña, in the province of Palencia.
La Olmeda is a great Roman archaeological gem measuring 4,400 square meters, with 1,500 square meters covered with mosaic floors of great historical value. Centuries ago, a splendid rural palace from the late Imperial period stood on this site, which still preserves magnificent structures and mosaics, worth visiting and admiring.
Hours:
La Olmeda is open during Holy Week from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is closed to the public on Mondays, April 14 and 21, for a holiday. Guided tours can be arranged by calling 979 119 997 or 670 450 143 during opening hours.
With the same ticket, you can visit the La Olmeda Roman Villa Museum in Saldaña. Located in the Church of San Pedro, it displays a selection of everyday and funerary objects found during the excavations of the Roman villa. The museum's visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will be closed on Mondays, April 14 and 21.
Finally, it is worth remembering that the Roman site of La Tejada in Quintanilla de la Cueza, just a few kilometers away, is closed to the public while the comprehensive renovation project proposed by the Palencia Provincial Council is carried out. For this project, the Provincial Council has received a grant from the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade's Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Historical Heritage for Tourist Use, financed with Next-GenerationEU funds.
